Sustainable Heat Supply Strategy at Energy Intensive Production Plant

Energy efficiency measures have reduced energy consumption by about 200 GWh in an energy intensive cellulose production plant. Some of the measures carried out were: increased energy recovery from production processes, heat production from waste incineration plant etc.

Power saving in Drying Process for the Inside Graphite Coating of Television Tube Funnel

Sakura Works of Hitachi Ltd., manufacturing colour CRT tubes, modified its tunnel kiln used for drying the inside graphite coatings of CRT tube funnels from one using electric heaters to that drying the coatings by the natural convection of hot atmosphere circulated from the adjacent frit sealing oven. Power was reduced significantly as a result. Before this modification, the drying of inside graphite coatings on the inner surfaces of funnels for colour CRT tubes in the tunnel kiln was done with electric heaters and took about 25 minutes. This rapid drying by heating consumed a lot of power. The new method, after the modification of the kiln, dries the inside graphite coatings with the natural convection of hot atmosphere at temperatures of 40 - 50 °C circulated from the frit sealing oven (heat treatment capacity: 11,000 Mcal/h [1,163 kW]) in about 40 minutes. This wholly eliminates the electric heaters (the total installed capacity was 120 kW and the actual load on them was 75 kW) from the kiln and also makes it possible to cope with the increase of the production without harm to the properties of TV tubes in quality. This improvement reduces the annual power use for the inside graphite coatings by 459,360 kWh, worth JPY 6.6 million (where JPY is the Japanese yen). This power expense saving gives a payback period of 1.65 years for the investment costs of JPY 11,million.
