The Longar family from Ammanford
recently purchased a solar water heating system. Their system incorporates
two solar collectors, with a total surface area of 3.3 square metres,
fitted onto their south west facing roof.
A new 170 litre "twin
coil" solar cylinder has been fitted into their airing cupboard in place of their
previous hot water cylinder, with the solar collectors and the boiler
piped up to this new cylinder. Their new system will generate hot water
energy of approximately 1,350 kilowatt hours per year, roughly 60% of
their annual water heating energy needs. A digital display enables the
family to see the temperatures in their system and, of course, they have "free" solar heated water running from their taps.
